課程概述

Course description:
This course attempts to help students develop a feeling for contemporary English (primarily the American variety) through close reading of selected essays and articles published in some respectable English media. Article topics cover a wide range of subjects and styles. Classroom activities include regular lectures and Q&A sessions plus some movie viewing. Since we meet at 9:10 in the morning, I expect you to be punctual. All lectures will be delivered in English. Every effort is made to reduce the tension and anxiety associated with learning a foreign language in the classroom so you can settle spontaneously in a receptive mode and feel uninhibited when the urge to perform kicks in. And since most of you come from elite high schools, I do expect you to perform with confidence in class, as I also expect you to like English and be willing to improve your English skills.

課程目標
Course objective:
The first aim is to steer you away from the textbook English you have been accustomed to since high school. Students learn to precisely articulate their views both in speaking and in writing using contemporary expressions and structures assimilated through reading assignments and practice sessions in class. While lectures rarely focus on the grammatical aspects of the writing (unless a specific request is made), idiomatic usage will be analyzed in appropriate context and fully explained. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to perform in class, as I will frequently prompt you with questions about specific expressions and meanings. As part of the training for public speech, I will also ask you to read passages out loud in class. We meet for 3 hours every Tuesday. I will do the first 2 hours, and my assistant will handle the last session.

This semester our Tuesday class will be broken down into 3 sessions: 9:10-10 a.m., 10:10-11:00 a.m., 11:10-12:00 noon. Note that there will be a 10-minute break (not 20) between sessions.
課程要求
Do’s and Don’t’s:
You are expected to attend 3 full sessions on Tuesday. Regular attendance and participation in Q&A sessions are required. There will be 3 writing assignments (including the final), but no midterm. No dutiful student will fail this course. You can also earn extra points by submitting a short paper in English. Repeaters are those who have a horrible absence record (3 or more unexcused absences) or cheat in exams. Plagiarism is not acceptable behavior.

You can use you tablet or notebook computer (or a smartphone) in class ONLY when I ask you to look up certain information on the Internet. Do not use LINE or FB or any other social media in class.

Grading:
A student who is in good standing (i.e., completes all assignments on time, has a solid attendance record, and participates in classroom activities) will be entitled to the following grading scheme (see also “Do’s and Don’t’s” above): Writing assignments 50%, final 40%, bonus for good behavior 10%.

Caution: If for some reason you do not think you can attend class on time and regularly, please DO NOT take this course.
